Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, October 1-3, 2010 Washington, DC, and suburbs Washington's World's Fair Weekend was developed by the Art Deco Society of Washington (ADSW) in coordination with the National Building Museum, the Greenbelt Museum, the Smithsonian Institution, and Bells For Peace, Inc. Join the ADSW for a weekend of activities surrounding the National Building Museum's exhibition, "Designing Tomorrow: America's World's Fairs of the 1930s." The exhibition will explore the popularization of modernism and the association between design, technology, and industry at fairs held between 1933–1940. Nearly 100 million Americans witnessed visions of a brighter future at six world's fairs across the nation. Participation in some of the weekend activities is restricted to ADSW members and members of other Art Deco Societies. It is, however, easy for anyone to participate in the full range of activities. Simply join ADSW at the time of registration. Space is limited for many events so early registration is recommended. An important objective of Washington's World's Fair Weekend is to raise funds to help Virginia Union University complete the carillon and restore the exterior of the Belgian Friendship Pavilion from the 1939-40 New York World's Fair, one of only two buildings from that fair to survive. The Guide to Washington's World's Fair Weekend provides additional information on the Belgian Friendship Pavilion, the role of music at the world's fairs, and the New Deal town of Greenbelt. Reservations can be made by mail (simply print the order form on page 33 of the Guide) or through this website. If you are unable to actively participate in Washington's World's Fair Weekend, please consider a generous donation to help restore and complete the Belgian Friendship Pavilion using the form located on page 31 of the Guide. Please spread the word about Washington's World's Fair Weekend by either copying the address for this page and pasting it into email messages to your friends or downloading the Guide (.pdf) and attaching it to email messages.
