Madam Satan

Reginald Denny and Kay Johnson in Madam SatanThe pre-code musical comedy Madame Satan was legendary director Cecil B. De Mille’s second talkie. The film, starring Kay Johnson, Reginald Denny, Lillian Roth, and Roland Young, is the story of a wealthy socialite’s efforts to win back her philandering husband.

Madame Satan includes extravagant musical numbers and stunning costumes particularly during a masquerade party held in dirigible moored above New York harbor.

Visit Filmfax Magazine's review for an extended plot synopsis and an assessment of the film.

A Vitaphone short will precede the main attraction.

Vitaphone Restoration Film Series

ADSW's bimonthly film series is a fundraising effort to support the restoration of vintage Vitaphone shorts by the Vitaphone Project. Each $4,500 raised will fund the professional restoration of a short at UCLA's Film and Television Archives. Although admission to the films will be free, attendees are asked to make a contribution to our Vitaphone restoration fund.

ADSW will select from a list of shorts awaiting restoration, and will receive a copy of each short restored. The series will offer a combination of feature films and musical shorts.

Screenings will be held every other month:
