Cover of The Great Gatsby (Penguin Readers edition)ADSW’s participation in the Big-Read-DC begins with the opening ceremony. As DC Councilmember, Jim Graham, leads the ceremony in the atrium, ADSW members and fashion enthusiasts will help set the mood dressed in Roaring Twenties' period style.

Enjoy performances by DC WritersCorps (preview of a new work inspired by The Great Gatsby), and live “jazz age” jazz by vocalist Lorie Williams. Washington Informer publisher Denise Rolark Barnes will host this kickoff event.

No tickets or reservations required. Just show up.

For those coming directly from work, a room will be available beginning at 5:30 PM to permit participants to change into their vintage clothing.

This event is part of The Big Read- D.C. (schedule · blog), presented by the Humanities Council of Washington, DC and the D.C. Commission on the Arts and Humanities. The Big Read is an initiative of the National Endowment for the Arts in partnership with the Institute of Museum and Library Services and Arts Midwest. In 2008, Washington, DC is reading The Great Gatsby.
