George Washington Jr. High School

Original Name: George Washington High School
Year Of Construction: 1935
Address: 1005 Mt. Vernon Ave. Alexandria, Virginia 22301
Architect(s): Raymond V. Long (Virginia State School Division)
Current Status: Civic & Religious
Original Use: Civic & Religious
Function:

We might say that this is a typical public works building-- monumental, but with up-to-date ornament, as well as function. The primary embellishments are the fluted piers at the central entrance to the building that rise above the roof and become stepped rounded fins. The shop building is also noticeable for its stylish sign, which may have been installed later but very much invokes the Art Deco-era spirit of the complex.
