The Art Deco Society of Washington will present society pianist
Frederick Hodges in his first Washington performance Monday, March 22nd
at the Charles Sumner School. The concert begins at 7 PM. The Art Deco
Society is a nonprofit organization devoted to the preservation of the
architectural, industrial, decorative, and cultural arts of the Art Deco
era.

Fully immersed in the music of the 1920s and 1930s, Frederick Hodges
performs as both pianist and vocalist for San Francisco's popular Royal
Society Jazz Orchestra. But, he is equally at ease playing ragtime music
from the first two decades of the 20th century. He was selected in 2007
as one of the nation's 10 best ragtime pianists.

Hodges' extensive repertoire includes both the standards of ragtime,
stride, and novelty piano and "new" discoveries. As an avid collector of
vintage sheet music, Hodges frequently reintroduces tunes long forgotten
by the public. Such tunes are often the highlight of his concerts.

Hodges has performed on national television, radio, and in several
Hollywood films. He is also a much sought-after silent film accompanist
for both live performances and on DVD. He performs regularly at the
Niles Essanay Silent Film Museum.

Hodges has participated in many prestigious festivals including in
Sacramento Jazz Jubilee, the West Coast Ragtime Festival, the Blind
Boone Festival in Columbia, Missouri, the Templeton Ragtime Festival at
Mississippi State University, the El Segundo Ragtime Festival, and the
Sedalia Scott Joplin Ragtime Festival.

In reviewing Hodges' recordings, film historian Leonard Maltin notes,
"If you love ragtime, stride piano, and novelty numbers of the teens,
1920s and 30s, you're bound to fall in love with ... Frederick Hodges.
Maltin continues "If you've never heard him tackle the finger-busting
novelties composed by Zez Confrey, James P. Johnson, Phil Ohman, and
George J. Cobb, you ain't heard nothing yet. Hodges is not only a great
technician; he brings verve and gusto to his performances, turning these
potential antiquities into vivid showpieces."
