Thoroughly Modern: Mildred Bailey Songs
Saturday, April 11, 2009
2:00 pm & 4:00 pm
Rasmuson Theater

Only nineteen years old, Julia Keefe is a sophomore at University of
Miami in Coral Gables, Florida. She grew up on the Nez Perce
Reservation in Kamiah, Idaho, and in Washington state. Saturday's
program will be a tribute to one of Julia's inspirations, Mildred
Bailey, who also spent her childhood on an Idaho reservation before
moving to Spokane. Mildred Bailey is considered one of the best jazz
vocalists of the big band era. Her influence can be heard in the work
of singers such as Rosemary Clooney, Ella Fitzgerald, and Billie
Holiday.

Julia will be accompanied by the Jerrol Pennerman Octet, a group of
young musicians who recently graduated from Howard University. Come
swing to the big band sound, and join us in celebrating America's
music. You'll hear favorite songs including Hoagy Carmichael's "Rocking
Chair," Cole Porter's "Begin the Beguine," and George & Ira Gershwin's
"Our Love Is Here to Stay."

The 60-minute program is free and open to the public, with no
reservations required. The 2:00 pm program will repeat at 4:00 pm.
