Help Save Historic Falkland Apartments
On Tuesday, March 10, at 7:30 pm, the Montgomery County Council
will hold a public hearing on historic designation of the New
Deal-era Falkland Apartments in Silver Spring. Unless the Council
designates the ENTIRE 22-acre complex, the 9-acre north parcel
will be demolished and replaced by 1,000 units of high rise
apartments and a large supermarket.
Falkland is a National Register-eligible property, a product of
the New Deal, and was an early example of the application of
English Garden City principles. It was the second large-scale
multifamily housing complex in the nation to be underwritten by
the Federal Housing Administration. Silver Spring Historical
Society will testify at the hearing in favor of designating the
entire Falkland complex. The County Council has the final word on
historic designation.
HOW YOU CAN HELP
-> Come to the hearing.
We need a large turnout to show that this is an important
issue. The County Council building is at 100 Maryland Avenue in
Rockville. Directions to the building, including Metro and
parking information, are online at
http://www.montgomerycountymd.gov/csltmpl.asp?url=/Content/council/dir.asp
If you want to testify, call 240-777-7931 ahead of time. But in
any case, please just be there to show support.
-> Write to the Council.
Whether or not you attend the hearing, please write to the
Council and tell them why you think ALL of the Falkland
Apartments should be historically designated and
protected. Record open until March 13. Letters go to:

President, Montgomery County Council
