On Saturday, July 26, 9:30 a.m. to 4:15 p.m. the Smithsonian will
present an all-day seminar, a Hallmarks of Art Certificate Elective,
"Art Deco: Vibrant, Eclectic, and Dynamic".

S. Dillon Ripley Center
1100 Jefferson Drive, SW
Metro: Smithsonian Mall Exit (Blue/Orange)

With the advent of the Jazz Age, denizens of the art world searched for
modern forms and decorative motifs that reflected this exciting new era.
They found it in geometric shapes such as chevrons, lozenges, zigzags,
and sunbursts and adopted machine-made technology and materials. Art
Deco—drawing on a variety of historical sources including ancient Egypt,
the classical world, and Asian art—soon reflected modern living, the
machine age, and the skyscraper.

Art historian Bonita Billman discusses this vibrant movement that used
all major media, including glass, ceramic, metal, wood, textiles, paper,
marble, and paint. Through illustrated lectures, she highlights examples
of Art Deco architecture, furniture, interiors, fashions,
advertisements, and even movies.
