Hearing on Historic Falkland Apartments
On Thursday, June 12, at 7:30 pm, the Montgomery County Planning Board will
hold a public hearing on historic designation of the New Deal-era Falkland
Apartments near downtown Silver Spring (East-West Highway and 16th
Street). Falkland is one of the County.s most significant historic
properties, as the second large-scale apartment complex in the U.S. to be
underwritten by the Federal Housing Administration. Eleanor Roosevelt cut
the ribbon when Falkland opened in 1937. These National Register-eligible
garden apartments incorporate ample green space and provide human-scale
relief from the high rises going up around Silver Spring.
Unless the Planning Board votes to designate ALL of Falkland, the owner
will be able to proceed with plans to demolish 9 of the 22 acres and build
over 1,000 units of high-rise housing and a Harris Teeter Supermarket north
of East-West Highway. The area is already inundated with traffic, and this
project would aggravate it further and will impact nearby neighborhoods on
both sides of the District line.
We need a strong show of support in the audience in order to convince the
Board to vote for designation. Please come to the hearing on Thursday, at
8787 Georgia Avenue in Silver Spring (at Spring Street). As in previous
threats to Falkland over the years, environmental groups, preservationists,
and civic groups are supporting historic designation and protection of the
entire Falkland site. ADSW will be testifying.
If you are unable to make the hearing, please send a short note to Planning
Board Chairman Royce Hanson at mcp-chairman@mncppc-mc.org, urging him and
the other Board members to recommend that the entire Falkland complex be
given historic designation.
