Thursday, April 24, 2008
6:00 - 8:00 PM
John A. Wilson Building Atrium
1350 Pennsylvania Avenue, NW
Washington, DC
No tickets or reservations required
ADSW’s participation in the Big-Read-DC begins with the opening
ceremony. As DC Councilmember, Jim Graham, leads the ceremony in the
atrium, ADSW members and fashion enthusiasts will help set the mood
dressed in Roaring Twenties' period style.
Enjoy performances by DC WritersCorps (preview of a new work inspired by
The Great Gatsby), and live “jazz age” jazz by vocalist Lorie Williams.
Washington Informer publisher Denise Rolark Barnes will host this
kickoff event.
No tickets or reservations required. Just show up.
For those coming directly from work, a room will be available beginning
at 5:30 PM to permit participants to change into their vintage
clothing.
This event is part of The Big Read D.C., presented by the Humanities
Council of Washington, DC and the D.C. Commission on the Arts and
Humanities. The Big Read is an initiative of the National Endowment for
the Arts in partnership with the Institute of Museum and Library
Services and Arts Midwest. In 2008, Washington, DC is reading The Great
Gatsby.
