CHEIN! CHEIN! CHEIN!

Dear ADSW Member:

On August 11, 2007, your Art Deco Society will sponsor another "Show and
Tell" focusing on lithographed metal toys from the 1920s through the
1950s. These are the delightful wind-up planes, trains, boats, and
action-figures that many of us remember from our youth. In addition to
their nostalgic charm, these toys also offer a wide variety of insights
into contemporary business as we explore rough-and-tumble competition,
piracy, and patent battles between the various manufacturers. We will
briefly explore some of the technology behind these toys, particularly
the methods of creating realistic three-dimensional figures from flat
sheets of thin metal within a very limited budget.

Join ADSW member Frank Morra at his 1921 Bungalow for an afternoon
devoted to Lithographed Metal Toys. During the afternoon, we'll look at
toys, photos of toymakers and factories as well as patent diagrams.
Specializing in the products of the Julius Chein and Wolverine
Companies, his collection includes banks, animated figures, amusement
park rides, trains, cars, and planes. The piece de resistance is a set
of wind-up multi-figure bands from the 20s to the 50s that includes
Jazzbo Jim, Sam and Ham, the Marx Merrymakers and the Dogpatch Four.

There will be a "hands on" portion, in which attendees will be able to
try their hand at making a miniature Chein Beach toy. (In the absence of
rare and expensive metal fabrication equipment, paper will be used)

Fellow collectors are encouraged to bring their metal toys to share with
the group. ADSW hope that you will be able to become a much more
discriminating collector with an appreciation of the back-story of many
of your (or your parents') most loved childhood companions.
